Q: Local library missing photos after repair. How do I safely resync with iCloud library?

Hello all…

Recently, the Photos app on my Mac was unable to open because "the library was damaged or missing."

Repairing the library ( Photos for OS X: Repair your library ) solved this. Photos was able to open again.

However, the repaired library is now missing the last month of photos.

The good news is that these are all in place on the iCloud library.

The photos app now says that the iCloud library is being updated - but it seem to be preparing to upload the entire library from scratch.

Key question: Will this updating process spot the difference between the local and iCloud libraries and ensure the two are safely and correctly merged - or will it wipe the iCloud library and replace it with the local library?

    Greetings BrendanDonlon,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you have recently repaired your Photos library, but it is missing the last month of photos. These photos are in iCloud Photo Library though, and the iCloud Photo Library is being updated and uploaded from scratch. I use iCloud Photo Library all the time on my iPhone. So, I know it's important that you have all of your photos.

iCloud Library will update and merge the existing photos in your Photos Library to the photos that are currently in iCloud Photo Library. The iCloud Photo Library will not be completely erased, it will just be updated with any changes or photo additions.

    Have an amazing day!
