Q: delete key macbook pro not working chrome

The delete key on my MacBook Pro suddenly stopped working. OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 - using Chrome

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Other OS, OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

You said "using Chrome". Does this mean that the delete key with other apps?
Also, if you show "Keyboard Viewer" does that show the Delete key bing pressed?

To turn on Keyboard Viewer got System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard and check Show Keyboard...... Then click on the keyboard icon in menu bar and select Show Keyboard VIewer.

Does an external KB work OK?

Did you do this as I said in my previous reply?
To turn on Keyboard Viewer go to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard and check Show Keyboard......

I did the first part involving system preferences; however, the 2nd part of your answer couldn't be done as I don't see a keyboard icon on y menu bar

What exactly are you trying to delete? You mentioned Chrome. You can't delete text in a web page unless the text is in an editable form field. Does the delete key work in TextEdit or other text editing apps?

The Keyboard viewer shows you what keys you depress a key. WHen you press the Delete key does it it show depressed in Keyboard viewer?
Also you never answered:
Does this mean that the delete key with other apps?

Yes, I found it. It doesn't show it 'depressing' when I hit the actual Delete key on the keyboard.

I phrased that poorly. It doesn't work on text I have written in, say, Facebook. I ahappened to be using Chrome at the time. The delete key doesn't work in Text Edit either.

You can try the following:
- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

- Try starting in Safe Mode

- If it is repairable reinstall the OSX

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.
Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

It does not show depressed in keyboard viewer. The delete key doesn't work in Text Edit either

Try a wired KB.
I suspect a hardware problem with your KB. YO can try the actions in my previous reply
