How Do I reformat a LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Disk?

I was using the LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Disk to back up my MacBook Pro. It has stopped responding to Time machine. Doesn't seem to recognize it when I plug it in. I've replaced it with a Seagate, but would like to reformat the LaCie and see if it will work. When I plug the disk into the usb port, the Mac doesn't respond to the LaCie although I can hear the LaCie. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Hi TreeTipsx2,

I understand that you wish to erase your LaCie hard drive. I know that it's important to have control over your data, so I'm happy to provide information to help with this.

Despite not being able to see the hard drive in Finder, you may still be able to erase it if it's seen in Disk Utility. Check out this article on the subject:

Disk Utility (El Capitan): Erase a volume
