Resound LiNX2 961 Firmware

I will be getting my first pair of hearing aids, the LiNX2 961 RIE, on Sept 20. While waiting for that fitting, I have been doing my homework, including participating in these Apple forums on this topic. Firmware appears to be a recurring topic here that I am concerned about.

It appears that there is still a shake-out period, with many posts on Bluetooth connectivity issues, with firmware updates sometimes correcting a problem. While cautiously optimistic, I want to be proactive in avoiding problems for my first hearing aid experience by getting any firmware updates as quickly as possible. That includes addressing my concern that, with regular iOS updates from Apple (the latest being 9.3.5 downloaded recently), connectivity might glitch again until a required matching firmware update is applied to my hearing aids (or vice versa).

I do not expect my audiologist to notify me when a new firmware version is available. I have also searched the Resound site and do not see any links to any pages that show the current firmware version, nor any instructions that would tell me how to check if my hearing aids have that latest firmware version. (Yes, I will ask my audiologist what version I am receiving in the initial fitting.)

I look forward to improvements to the Smart app and web site, where it would not only be possible to confirm whether my hearing aids are current, but also possible to download and apply firmware updates to the hearing aids via the Bluetooth connection rather than scheduling an audiologist appointment. In the meantime, I am looking for a way to get automatically notified (perhaps an email distribution list for consumers and professionals) when firmware updates are ready to apply, with confirmation which iOS version is required for compatibility with that firmware.

This seems like a 'Resound problem' - they will be able to tell you how to check the firmware version, how to use their app and if they are going to support user based firmware updates and changes or additions to their software.

I'd suggest you look for their support site, forums or use their contact info as a last resort. They will know more about all the things you ask instead of the Apple users who help out here.

As for iOS updates, look in 'Settings > iTunes & app store', disable the 'Updates' option to stop automatic OS upgrades. You may want to do the same for the apps if you really want manual control over them too. You will need to read release notes & reviews to work out if the updates change anything you rely on.

P.S. wait and see if others can help here too 🙂

Thanks Drew. The Resound web site does not offer a support forum, which is perhaps why Resound technical support for their "Made for iPhone" hearing aids is provided by user "gnresound" here. Resound and Apple are working together to address the Bluetooth connectivity issues, pleasantly enough without "finger-pointing" at each other, and I look forward to a more robust discussion of how to address keeping iOS updates and hearing aid firmware synchronized.

Yes, I did also send a similar email directly to Resound at "gnresound@gnresound.com") and hope that other users seeing my post here will do the same to "bump" these issues to a higher priority with Resound developers. 🙂

Hi Drew,

I'm running IOS 10.0 on my iPhone and I have nothing but praise for the connectivity between the phone and my ReSound HA's. I had no problems when I upgraded the OS. The sound quality is just vastly, vastly superior to telecoil connecivity; it's like a night and day difference. You're hearing the sound binaurally, which makes it feel like you're wearing a set of high-end studio headphones. Good luck with your new HA's!

I got the Linx2 962 RIC from the VA back in May (so it has whatever firmware was available at the time). I had tried the in the canal version, but had a LOT of problems with the two aids even talking to each other, and the 312 battery life kinda ***** particularly if you stream things a lot--the RIC version has two kinds, one with the 312 battery, the other with the 13 battery...GET THE LARGER BATTERY!!!

As for working with the iPhone, no issues with version 9.x and iPhone 6s+. You would probably prefer a good pair of headphones rather than streaming (the bass is really thin), but, it works OK. It does eat batteries...I walk ~30-45 min a day, and I can go two days with streaming music, but, during the third, one of the aids will crap out. There are some issues with BLE connecting from the iPhone to the aids depending on positioning (for instance if I have it in my right front pants pocket, the left aid might lose the signal at times). Wearing on your arm will help that, or even carrying it. YMMV on this--one thing I was told, and seems to be somewhat true, is that your head itself can attenuate the signal, and sometimes the aids will have issues connecting with each other if your head is large (TRUE--the VA audiologist called Resound support about issues getting the in the canal aids to work with me, and he told her my head could be too large, or contain too much water or fat, attenuating the signal). With the RIC, no issues.

I got the iPhone 7+ two days ago, and set it up with the aids, installed the Resound App (you can use the app, or just use the built-in Apple controls--the biggest difference is the app lets you adjust any of the special features and treble and bass, but, the built-in stuff will do the basic setting of volume and switching programs). No problems with iOS 10 on the 6s+ or 7+, but I have read that some users need to get firmware updates for the aids to allow them to work. My iPhones are setup to work with my 2013 Volvo S60, so calls go through the audio system. When you have hearing aids, the phone can be set to play audio or calls through the aids, or other things around (like a car) and the automatic switching (where the audio goes, aids or car) could use improvement--hint to Apple...work with some of the Veterans with Resound or other bluetooth aids to make compatibility work better)

There is a fairly long thread on connectivity here, https://gnresoundblog.com/2014/01/27/iphones-and-hearing-aids/ and if you call Resound Support (consumersupport@gnresound.com or 1-888-735-4327), a lot of times they'll be able to help you directly (you will need to see your audiologist for any adjustments or updates, though).

Good luck. I had Phonak for years, but the Resound aids are the best and clearest I've ever had. My hearing loss is moderately severe (80-90 db down in each ear), and they make it possible for me to function with others and hear conversations a LOT better.

Good luck!!
