Q: 2011 15" Macbook pro lower ram slot doesnt work. 3 beeps everytime I start my Mac.

Hey Guys,

So Ive come across this weird issue with my mac. So I was using the Mac at work for like 4 hours continuously and then when it was time to go home, I simply put the screen down and put the Mac to sleep. When I re-opened the Mac at home, it started with the 3 beeps and it wouldnt start.

So after panicking for like half an hour, I decided to take google up on this question. I found many queries but nothing similar to mine. So I opened the back panel of the Macbook, removed both rams and re-seated them (as one of the posts on google said to do) twice but it still did not work. I took off the bottom ram and tried turning it on with a single top ram and it worked.

A bit of history, Apple had this quality control program where any 2011 Macbook pros affected by a faulty video card can have their logic boards changed for free by taking it in to apple. My macbook was one of them and the apple genius guys changed the logic board. Long and behold after six months the lower ram bank slot stopped working. My question is, do i have any recourse with apple since its only been six months, and if i order a new logic board from them, what are the chances that this will not happen again?

Any past experiences you guys could share to help me would be greatly appreciated.

This is a user to user forum.  We are not Apple employees.  Just users like yourself.  You will need to ask your question directly to the horses mouth.

Call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-275-2273.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations.  Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.  See what they can do for you!

    GOOD LUCK!

Only a fortune teller CrystalBallFortuneTellerSmiley copy.gif can answer that one!  FWIW, I had mine replaced out of warranty as well as the extended repair program had expired for FREE3 or 4 yrs ago.  My 2008 MBP is till going strong.

You have not shown enough evidence that the lower RAM SLOT is the problem. You have shown that the DIMM plugged into the lower slot did not seem to work, and when you removed it, the problem seemed to be solved, once.

RAM problems are often flaky problems, and the most common failure is the DIMM, not the slot. You need to try restarting and running for a while several times before drawing ANY conclusions.

You also need to try the DIMM you think is working in the lower slot, again, several times, before attempting to draw any conclusions.

If the problem follows the DIMM, and not the slot, then the DIMM from the lower slot is the issue, not the slot.

SO I took your advice and called up Apple's customer relations and spoke with a nice guy who said that they will make an exception for my case. They were super helpful and gave me a new logic board to replace my current one but I have to pay for labour.

All in all, YMMV, but dealing with Apple's customer service is always a good experience for me.
