Q: Selling a new MacBook

Hello everybody!

I was gifted this MacBook, but I want to sell it since I already have one I'm happy with.

When I check the serial number to see the warranty, it says I have to register it. If I register it, the warranty will start and the laptop will be associated with my account, right?

What stops other people from taking the serial number and registering the laptop to their account, and therefore starting the warranty?

Should I give the serial number to interested people in this case?

Thanks!

The warranty started the day it was sold, not when you register it. The warranty clock is already ticking down.

This article from Apple may help you to configure your computer for sale. The buyer will have the serial number when he has access to the computer.

For the sake of information, you should not share the serial number

of a computer with others who may be able to exploit the information.

In the case of the gifted, & never turned on, never personalized Mac

you could get information to share (less the serial number) that is on

the box the unit shipped in. Also for more info, a Lookup by Serial No.

may yield clues as to when it was build and where.

Do not share the Serial Number.

If you sell as-new  product never used, in person is better than online.

Post images of product in box, unopened is best, if you use amazon

or ebay or local craigslist; be watchful of scams and ploys that may

be used to rip-off you or your identity... Be careful what you have out

in the public view, it may reveal too much unintentionally, if you sell

the item online. If the person who gifted the item is of a nature to not

be offended by your situation in regard to the gift; & IF it was bought

from an Official Apple Store (not just 'authorized reseller') they may

be able to return the unopened box for a refund within 14-days from

the date of purchase; that could be a good way to regain full value.

    Good luck in this matter!

Elsewhere, in reply to a question about returning an Apple product that

had been received as a gift, a 'community specialist' posted helpful link

that may be revealing. While it may not answer your specific question.

There is a link that includes conditional suggestions on returns & refunds:

    Not sure if your situation may be able to advantage from this information;

or if you were able to arrange a return through the person who gave you

the MacBook, within the 14-day return period, if bought direct from Apple.

    Good luck in any event!
