macbook pro booting to black screen with cursor

My brand new MacBook Pro (running 10.11.6) has taken to booting to a black screen with a cursor. I have also come in to find it in that state after it has gone to sleep. Often a forced restart will fix it but today I had to do a P-RAM reset. Anyone know what is causing this and does the machine need attention?

Thanks

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), 32GB RAM, G-RAiD Studio 6TB etc.

Hi insch,

I understand that your MacBook Pro is not consistently booting, and often just shows a black screen with a cursor. I know that it's important for your devices to work reliably, so I'm happy to provide some resources to help with this.
