"your system has run out of application memory"

I spent 5 hours running an ocr app and got hit by this only 35 minutes from completion. I have 8 gb built-in.

Is there anything I can do to free enough application memory?

I can't find any instructions on how to reset nvram without using two hands, or use safe mode without breaking my accessibility tools [mouse drivers, scrolling tools, etc.], either.
