Q: My music from my I Pod classic wont play on my computer

I connected my I Pod classic to my computer. I see the music list from my I Pod classic in the Music bar of the I Tunes program. However the list is light grey in color. When I select a song from the list , it wont play.

If the iPod's song list (as shown in iTunes) is greyed out, that probably means you use automatic syncing (the Sync Music setting) to load songs on iPod.  When you use automatic syncing, iTunes keeps iPod "in sync" with your iTunes library; you cannot directly access songs on the iPod.  That's why they are greyed out.

Songs on iPod should be in your iTunes library.  To play that song in iTunes, find it in your music library and play it from there, not from your iPod.

Thank you. I haven't used I Tunes in a very long time. I had to download athe program I Tunes program on my new computer. Therefore the song list on my I Pod Classic is not in my I Tunes library. How do I transfer them in there so I can listen to them?

By design, iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from iTunes library to iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except songs purchased from iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod music transfer," you should get some links, including an article by CNET on the topic.

After iPod's song files are on your computer's drive, add them to your current iTunes library.  Once your iTunes library is complete (has all of your songs), set up automatic syncing to your iPod, which associates iPod to this iTunes library.  When you set it to Sync Music, the iPod is initially erased, but then loaded from iTunes library.  iTunes keeps iPod updated so it's "in sync" going forward.

If you have specific questions about any of the above, please post back.

NOTE:  Songs purchased from the iTunes Store can be downloaded again to your new iTunes library at no cost.
