Q: Problem with Windows Installer Package

My daughter has an iPhone 6s.  I tried to hook it up to an older version of iTunes on my laptop and received an error that iTunes must be upgraded to work with her phone.  So I attempted to run an update on iTunes which failed.  After the update failure, iTunes would no longer open.

So I uninstalled it altogether and tried to download a completely new install.  I downloaded the latest version - iTunes6464setup.  However, every time I try to run it, the install fails near the end of the install.  I get the same error.

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

I have tried to run this as an administrator.  I have closed out any virus protection or application control software that would have caused a problem.  I have made sure all my Windows 10 updates are up-to-date.  Event viewer only gives the following error -

"Task Scheduler service found a misconfiguration in the NT TASK\Apple\AppleSoftwareUpdate definition. Additional Data: Error Value: C:\Program Files (x86)\Apple Software Update\SoftwareUpdate.exe."

I assume this has to be related to the install as all traces of apple software were previously removed and this error matches up to the date/time of the install.

Ironically, I get the same Windows Installer Package error when I tried to install iCloud too....

Can anyone help please?

Try repairing Apple Software Update from the programs & features control panel, and then try to update iTunes again.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I missed you'd already removed the software. Try the Microsoft clean up tool listed in the notes to the second box. Interesting catch in the event viewer. Perhaps manually cleaning up something in the task scheduler service would also let the install proceed.

Can you see and delete this task?

thanks!  I had to download and manually install the Software Update, but that seems to have resolved the problem.  I re-ran the iTunes installer afterwards and it completed correctly this time.

    Thanks a million....!!!!

I had already thoroughly removed the software, including registry cleanup.  That wasn't the problem.  The problem was in the installer file.  When it went to install the Software Update module, it kept failing for some reason.  I ran the repair like you mentioned and it still failed.  I had to download only and manually install.
