Q: how long does the disk utility repair take in recovery mode

Why should a SSD show it is using a massive amount of storage as 'backups' leaving not enough space for actual files??

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Disk Utility repair takes about the same amount in Recovery as it does when you start in Safe Mode, as it does when you run it "live" -- on the order of five minutes.

That has NOTHING to do with your other query. Backups build up on your drive because you have not connected your Backup Drive recently.

These files DO NOT preclude you from creating new files, however. If an Applications asks for more drive space, some of the files labeled "Backups" Instantly yield their space for the new files and are discarded to make space.
