Q: Floating Shape in WORD 2011

When I open a document with WORD for Mac 2011 a box complete with shadow appears in the upper LH corner of the window.  When I close the document the box remains on the desktop.  If I attempt to open Finder to go to my desktop it goes away but comes back as soon as I open another document.  Images....

iMac with 16 gb, 3.06 duo core running OSX 10.9.5

Word is version 14.6.7

How do I get rid of this aberration?
