Q: iCloud Photo Library & iCloud Drive Questions

Hi good day, I am having a huge challenge with iCloud  Photo Library. I have never bak up my photos and video before (it's around 30 GB) and I finally organized and sorted out my photos into albums. I decided that I would purchase additional iCloud storage and store this on iCloud and free up space on my iPhone , as well as a easing the photos anytime I want in any of my Apple devices. However I realise that this iCloud Photo Library does not permanently store photos and videos on the cloud and then allow you to delete those on your phone without affecting the stored content on iCloud . As well if click to open a photo or play a video on say my iPad which was copied to the cloud, it downloads that to my iPad hence using the iPad local storage space. This has opened up a ton of questions and will appreciate the comments and answers to my questions below whole I figure out what to do.

Thanks very much.

Sincerely appreciated.

iCloud Drive & iCloud Photo Library Questions

1) When you view or play a photo or video on your iCloud Photo Library on another Apple Device (i.e. Not the original device which was used to upload those photos or videos to iCloud), does it 'download' them to you device locally when you click view or play hence using your device local storage? If so, is there any way to avoid this?

2) If I delete a photo or video on the device, does it also deletes from iCloud?

3) Can I use iCloud Drive as a permanent storage of my photos and videos instead of iCloud Photo Library? If so, if I upload to iCloud Drive and then delete a photo or video locally on my device, will it remain in iCloud Drive?

4) Is there a way to enable on your Apple Device for photos and videos to be automatically uploaded to iCloud Drive? If not, how would I go about uploading photos to iCloud Drive from my iPhone or iPad?

5) Can the Photos App access photos and videos stored on iCloud Drive, and through the app view those photos and videos?

6) Can I replace the original raw photos and videos from iCloud Photo Library with the Optimized versions stored on my iPhone? If so, how can I do this?

7) Can I use another Cloud storage service such as Dropbox and access with the Photos App?

8) Can I do a backup of my iPhone or iPad to iCloud without backing up the Photos and Videos? (In the event that I decide to store my photos and videos on another cloud storage service such as Dropbox).

Yes - an iPhone/iPad backup is not related to iCloud Photo Library or any other iCloud functionality.

Generally speaking, all iCloud services - iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Music Library, iCloud Drive, iCloud itself - are sharing services, not archival services. The source for the data in these places is iCloud, so any changes you make on the data on any device or computer will be changed on all devices and computers, because the changes you do, are changes that get sent to the source and pushed to everything else. The only exception to this is your device iCloud backups. They are archived on iCloud so you can use them to restore your device from that backup.

    Best of luck,

To increase space available, go Settings/iCloud/Photos and select Optimize iPhone/iPad Storage. That will reduce the space required by about 90% when fully effective.
