Q: Changing time songs stay in "Recently Added" playlist

My "Recently Added" playlist is showing songs I have had in iTunes for years. I right click on the playlist to drop the menu and all I get is the ability to change the sub categories that appear - songs, artist, movies, etc. there is no standard smart playlist window that appears. No sorting options for the playlist. All the discussion entries I have read state that Recently Added is a smart playlist, but it appears dumb to me.  Am I missing something?

From the left area of your Music screen:

    Control-click on "Recently Added":

    Choose "Edit Smart Playlist":

    Modify the "Date Added".

UPDATE - You said "I right click ..." which confuses me since we are in the iTunes for Mac forum.  That is why I said "Control click" above.

I don't think Tom wanted to create another smart playlist but wanted the standard one to work better.

In my iTunes library the recently added section is split into the following sections

    Today

    This Week

    This Month

    This Year

    2015

    2014

    2013

    2012

    2011

    2010

    2009

Personally, I don't consider albums added 7 years ago as recent

My solution edits the existing playlist.  It does not add one.

I agree.  My solution limits the playlist to items added in the last four weeks.

I may have misunderstood, but I thought it was the Recently Added item in the top section of the menu that was the issue, it certainly is for me.

Your screen shot is very helpful in explaining what's going on.

The "Recently Added" you are pointing to in your screen shot is under "Library".  It is not a playlist.  And indeed, as you say, it shows all additions by year, going back a long time.

To see the Recently Added playlist, click "Songs" (two rows under the "Recently Added" you show highlighted, then click the "Recently Added" playlist under "Playlists" as shown in my first screen shot above (repeated here):
