Q: storage final cut pro x

I have a macbook pro but only 8 GB . This is a problem for me when I edit a lot of videos on Final Cut Pro X.  Is there a way where I could store final cut on to like an external hard drive and open it only when i need it? Or is there a better way for me to save storage on fcpx? Or better yet, extend my macbook's internal memory? Thank you, I really need some guidance here.

    In addition to Toms' comment.

Make sure your new external is formatted to MAC OS Extended before putting it to work.

When you have it set up, create a new Library on the external using File>New:

That would be called External Media and yes that will work.

Or, create a NEW Library on the External and direct all captured media to the new Library, called Managed Media.

You should leave the FCP X application on your system drive.

Think of a Library as a packed file that FCP X has access to.

A Library can reside anywhere you like, external drives free your system drive of juggling the media files.

The proviso is it needs to be fast enough to handle the media that you use.
