iCloud Drive has turned all files in my Dropbox into .icloud files that cannot be opened

If I try to access files on my Dropbox on iPad or iPhone I see that all the files in my Dropbox have become .icloud files that can't be opened in Dropbox. Then I unticked the "Desktop" option in the iCloud Drive control panel and all my desktop folders suddenly vanished! What the...?

Did that, obv. Now it's taking hours to download my local files back onto the desktop. But the files within Dropbox are still mutant .icloud files that can't be opened. I don't like that iCloud Drive is messing with the local files on my desktop and changing all the file extensions within my Dropbox without asking. It should leave those the heck alone. This is Frankendrive!
