Got a MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan. System is very slow

My MacBook Pro is up today and running El Capitan. I have 16Gb of Ram and the hard disk is less than half full. Yet my system is quite slow to open file even for typing this message. I know that Back up utility running in the back ground will slow it down but even when back up is not running it is still quite slow.

Which is the best way to speed up system or check if malware or unnecessary files prevent my system from running at top speed ?

I have been using MacKeeper utilities to clean temporary files and free memory for more than one year as my system almost ground to halt before I used MacKeeper.

I cannot add memory as all slots are used

Thanks in advance

MacKeeper is a complete and total scam. Whatever improvement you may have seen after installing MacKeeper is coincidental. It should be removed immediately. See: http://www.thesafemac.com/ongoing-mackeeper-fraud/.

After you remove it, post an EtreCheck report so we can see what else you may have installed that is causing an issue: http://etresoft.com/etrecheck.

Hello Kaz-k,

I also uninstalled MacKeeper.

Rebooted in safe mode and cleared and used disk utility to check disk (all good). There was some improvement after that.

I checked login items and startup programs and removed most of them.

Emptied the Library Cache (CFBundle identifier) and moved to trash. Restarted computer and emptied trash.

In safari deleted history.

Also ran "malwarebytes" for final check.

Performance is much better now 🙂

Hello Kaz-K

You remember I said I did not think setting the SMC was necessary... Although my system speed improved after getting rid of MacKeeper and cleaning up Cookies and removing malware with malwarebytes utility, I was not 100% satisfied. Today I revisited your feedback to me as well as other Users regarding reset of System management Controller.

So after checking Apple support note on the subject, I have done so today and I must say it has made a big difference 🙂

Thanks again
