Apple is not a car company...yet!

They do not take trade-ins of used products for new.

You can either backup its contents and completely wipe the device by turning off Find My Phone and properly deauthorise the device from your Apple ID and try to sell the iPod Touch on your own.

OR

use a service such as

Gazelle and see how much cash they will give you for a 5th gen iPod Touch.

You will still need to properly backup and setup the iDevice as new before you send this to Gazelle.

In either circumstance, you use the cash proceeds toward purchasing a new iPod Touch.

I would wait before purchasing any new iPod Touch as Apple wiil be soon announcing new iPad/iPod Touch and Mac models before the end of the year.
