Q: Cannot Access iCloud Account

I am attempting to access my iCloud account.  My phone currently states that my iCloud login is an email I know longer use.  When I attempt to login using that "apple id" online, it says it does not exist.  I cannot log in using that apple ID so that I can logout and login with my current ID.

I've seen older posts with a "FaceTime" trick - where they login with the new apple ID on the FaceTime app settings and while I have tried that it does not seem to work.

I'm constantly getting prompts to sign into my iCloud account, but cannot do so - because said account no longer exists, and I cannot change it.  I haven't downloaded the most recent update (iOS 9.3.5) but other than that I am up to date.

ANy ideas?

Did you change the email used for the Apple ID on your Apple account, or did you set up a brand new Apple account with the new email address for the ID? If you simply changed your Apple ID to the new email address, then sign in with your new email and password, and sign out of the old Apple ID on your iPhone using your current password.

I set up a brand new account.

When I put in my current password with the old ID, it prompts me to reset my password (which i've done 3 or 4 times now tonight).  It will not let me log out of the old (nonexistent) account.

The account is not nonexistent just because you created a different one, or because the email is no longer functional. Apple IDs are always there. So, if you created a brand new ID, then you will have to sign into that old ID and change the password in order to get the iCloud account signed out.

Make sure that you are signing in with the correct email address.

You can go to this link to see if you can locate the old ID: FORGOT APPLE ID

In your original post, you indicated that you cannot log your current Apple ID in online. Where online do you mean? iCloud.com? If so, then it knows nothing about your old ID. Have you tried signing into it directly with your new ID?

I go to the forgot apple ID site for the old ID.  It says "XXX email is not an apple ID"

My current ID logs in online fine.  I am able to log in with my current ID on FaceTime, on iCloud.com, on every part of my iPhone except for the "iCloud" section of my iPhone.

Basically my iPhone says email address X is an apple ID.  however, apple does not treat email address X as an apple id.  so the forgot apple ID, recover apple ID, etc. do not work.

Is the address that is no longer found an old AOL address, by any chance? If so:

AOL Usernames can no longer be used with the iTunes Store - Apple Support

If it is an old AOL address, then you would have to contact Apple Support for help:
