Q: how to re-attach audio in 10
How does one re=attach--or un-detach-- the audio strip to a video clip in iMovie 10?
I'm trying to further whittle down the clip, but the separated audio gets off-sync with the video when I do so--and highlighting them both does not treat them as a single unit again; the audio still lags behind. It's as if they need to be physically re-merged so trimming the clip does not throw off the audio sync.
iMovie 10, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

You can only reattach audio as an undo operation. The synchronisation of the audio with the video depends on the little green vertical line connecting them. As long as you don't allow it to move they will remain in sync. If you need to trim the video where the green line is you need to first press command-alt then click in the top half of the audio track where you want the link to be repositioned. You can then trim without affecting sync.
If all else fails you can usually restore sync manually if you first expand the timeline to its maximum (slider to the left of 'Settings').
