fine it has sooooo much on it, but like I say upgraded to this blinking El Capitan and it won't work

Sep 12, 2016 2:59 AM in response to dooleydby dialabrain,I have a feeling based on your issue with Photos and what you did to fix it that you somehow created a new user or renamed the account when you updated to El Capitan which is why all your folders had the red icons on them.
What you can try since this is on an external drive is with the info panel for the external drive open, unlock the lock and set all the permissions to Read & Write. Or you can check "Ignore ownership on this volume". Never do that on the internal drive or any drive with OSX on it.
