Q: cannot transfer folder to external hard drive in e capitan

I have upgraded to el capitan I have an external hard drive which I copy lots of photos to. it won't let me do it now, I honestly have too much on it to format it and quite frankly do not see the reason for it, it worked perfectly well until I  upgraded. any advice please?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

How is the drive formatted? Select the drive and press Command + I.

I have a feeling based on your issue with Photos and what you did to fix it that you somehow created a new user or renamed the account when you updated to El Capitan which is why all your folders had the red icons on them.

What you can try since this is on an external drive is with the info panel for the external drive open, unlock the lock and set all the permissions to Read & Write. Or you can check "Ignore ownership on this volume". Never do that on the internal drive or any drive with OSX on it.
