Q: can't import photos from iPhone to iPhoto

Hi there, I'm having trouble importing photos from my iPhone to iPhotos.. basically its only importing the most recent pictures on my phone and leaving some of the older ones. interestingly, these are the photos which must be accessed via iCloud in order to view them.
My suspicion is that this is something to do with the fact that I recently transferred iPhoto to an external drive. In order to upload photos from my phone I need to make sure the external drive is plugged in.
Could someone help me get my precious pictures off my iPhone and into iPhoto?!

Thanks, Shaun

If iCloud Photo Library is enabled on your iPhone with the option "Optimize Storage", you can no longer use an USB connection to import the photos reliably to your Mac using iPhoto, Aperture, Photos, or Image Capture.  The problem is, that you will only see the photos in the Import panel, that are not "Optimized" on the iPhone.

Use iCloud to import the photos to your Mac.

    We need details

What version of the OS and of iPhoto are you using?

I recently transferred iPhoto to an external drive

And if your iPhoto library is on an EHD then of course that EHD must be available to access your photos

Indeed. It says the version I'm accessing on the EHD is "Version 1.5 (370.42.0)"

    I'm using El Capitan 10.11.6

Yes, I thought importing from iCloud might be a good way to do it. Only trouble is, this leads me to ask another daft question... How do I import from iCloud to my mac? I'm logging into the photos section on the iCloud website and I can't seem to see an easy immediate option to import to my mac?
The other thing is, it might import to the version of iPhoto on the macs internal drive which I can't access.. I can only access the version of iPhoto on my external hard drive..

    Exactly.

To select all photos at once you can select the first photo, then hold down the shift key and click the last photo of the range you want to download, at least, if you are using safari.

Make sure, you are using the "Select" button on the Photos page, then select the photos, then use the download button in the toolbar.  If you do not use the controls of the Photos.app but the download controls of your Web Browser you would only download the thumbnails of your photos.
