After Sept 01 update - OS X El Capitan, everything is pretty much non-responsive

For a few days, everything seemed fine after I did the Sept 1st update, but a few days ago my wife complained none of the applications would open when she logged in. I took a look, and sure enough, browser/terminal window/app store/steam/nothing would open. It just bounced/dinged once and never did anything. I rebooted and everything seemed to be okay afterward. The next day, I logged in and had same issue. However, no reboot would fix this. I was able to boot into safe mode, but even from there I couldn't get very far. I ended up restoring from the day before (Aug 31) to get my iMac working again. Has anyone else had this issue or know a way past it? I know I need the security update, but there's little point if it ends up bricking my OS. If I don't find a solution, I'm guessing I will need to wipe/re-install, which I'd prefer not to do. Here's info for what I have

OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

Processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Startup Disk Macintosh HD

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

Thank you for any help!

It could be interference by some third-party system modification that doesn't play well with the security update.

This program will show you what you have installed and anything that is failing: http://etrecheck.com

It was written by one of the contributors here, etresoft.

Since you do not have the security update installed, it might be difficult to determine what might have generated the problems.

Initially after restore, my first login it seems fine. I switch users and it never completes the setup. I hard power it off, then I'm able to login to the other account. I removed the samsung Kies software my wife uses for her phone since I saw others mention issues with it. Notice, not new update has been applied though. Then I switch back to my account and it starts behaving badly again, even without update.... so I booted back into safe mode, downloaded/ran etrecheck, but I'm not sure it's going to show anything useful unless I run it after normal boot up. Thoughts?

EDIT: here is the report from EtreCheck in safe mode

Offhand, I would suspect the Nvidia drivers. The iMac should have Apple drivers for the video, but I don't own an iMac.

Not important, but I don't think VMWare 3 works with El Capitan. It's not loaded, so it wouldn't cause the problems.

You also have a driver for some mouse and for Fitbit.

I've never been impressed with the performance of third-party mouse drivers, but I'm not familiar with the one you have installed.

I did a lot of testing yesterday without much luck. A coworker of mine who is a good bit more OS X savvy than me suggested I restore to a point prior to the last update, mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plistbackup, reboot MAC, then re-install latest update. Prior to that, I once again got rid of the Kies Samsung software, reverted back to the default OS X driver for nvidia, then did the above instructions. So far so good...keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again Barney. I thought I was free and clear until the Nvidia Web Driver popped up with an update. Soon as I applied/restarted....it came back. I've posted this to the Nvidia forums for awareness:

After putting the latest OS X security update on my iMac, everything seemed to be working fine until I received the last update from NVIDIA. None of my startup/apps would come up, they just hung. I couldn't even bring up a console/terminal window to investigate further. At first, I didn't realize what was causing my issue and proceeded to restore, re-update, and have it happen all over again. After last restore, everything was working fine and I thought I had figured out my issue (Samsung Kies). However, the NVIDIA Web Driver notified me of a new update I hadn't installed yet. Soon as I did the update/restart, my problem was back. I couldn't start the NVIDIA Driver Manager to switch back. I was only able to switch back to the OS X default NVIDIA driver after booting into safe mode and re-installing (note: it would not run in safe mode either until I re-installed). Also, I did try re-installing in safe mode and rebooting without switching from the NVIDIA Web Driver and the problem still existed. Here's my info

System Version: OS X 10.11.6 (15G1004)

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
