Some of my photos have a letter 'J' in the corner and I cannot edit them with the Photos edit tools. Anyone know why?

The letter "J" means, that the photo is part of a "RAW" and "JPEG" pair, and the JPEG file has been selected as the original image file. If the RAW file is selected as the original, you would be seeing a "R" in the corner.
What exactly happens, when you try to edit these photos? Do you get a message about a missing file? Or what is happening?
Try to switch from the JPEG original to the RAW original. Open the image in EDIT mode, if you can, and then use the command "Image > Use RAW as Original". This command is only available in Edit mode.
The J is indicating the JPEG photo form a RAW-JPEG stacked pair - to edit starting with the RAW you enter edit mode and then under the image menu select use RAW as original - the bardge will change to R
AS to why you can not edit - no idea unless you provide details - whay can you not edit?

Thanks for the feedback. You are correct in that the pics are in pairs, JPEG and RAW, from the camera. The trouble is that when I open one that has a J on it and try to edit it, the edit tools are greyed out and unresponsive. My work around was to delete all the files and reimport them, only the JPEGs, leaving the RAW ones on the SD card. That's fine for now and I shall do the same in future since for top quality editing I use Photoshop and the RAW images.
