Q: MBP Mid 2012 Screen Problem

A stripe has just appeared on my screen of my Mid-2012 MBP. It looks like a section of the LCD is gone bad. Is this a video card or a bad LCD screen issue?

    Hi BEM,

I understand you're seeing a strip on the display of your MacBook Pro that otherwise shouldn't be there. I know it's important to have a good looking screen, so I'm happy to provide some direction to help with this.

To start, try resetting your NVRAM, which can help with display issues:

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

    Resetting NVRAM

    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
    3. Turn on your Mac.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
    5. Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
    6. Release the keys.

After resetting NVRAM, you may need to reconfigure settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.

If you continue to have the same issue after resetting your NVRAM, you may want to look into service options:

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities, cheers!

Let's be real...resetting the NVRAM/PRAM isn't going to solve a stripe across the screen.

Your issue narrows it down to two possibilities - your LCD and your logic board (your MacBook Pro does not have a video card).

It is most likely your LCD. The only way it would be your logic board would be if there is some sort of damage to the connector from your display to your logic board, via the LVDS cable.

The way you would rule out the logic board is by disconnecting the display from the logic board. That will cause your machine to automatically send the video to a Thunderbolt or MiniDisplay. Simply unplug the display and plug in an external monitor.

If when you boot it with an external display and the line is gone - which in my experience, it will be - then you know it is the display, as the video is still traveling through the logic board to get to the display.

I would schedule an appointment with a Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They have the proper equipment to test it correctly and safely.

    Visit: locate.apple.com.

Good luck, and let me know if I can be any further assistance.

    Thanks.

I went back to my laptop and the stripe was gone. Now everything looks ok. i did have it connected to another monitor and there wasn't any problems on the monitor.  This could be a possible problem that is just starting to appear.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
