Q: How to clean up storage in "others"?

My hard disk info indicated that I have 100 g under "others", but unidentified.

I want to clean this "others" up, to free up more hard disk space.

How to do that?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Other is merely everything else not included in the specific listings and includes things like cache files which you don't want to mess with. With a few exceptions most people who are running out of space have too many media files on their computers. Before you do anything I suggest that you perform a safe boot - restart your computer and hold the shift key until you see the Apple icon. This restart will take longer than normal because the disk utility program is checking the drive and cache files are being trimmed. Once the computer reaches the Finder, restart normally. This may free up a significant amount of space. If it did not your best bet is to look at media files.
