Q: Problems with sleep/wake, app launch and websites

Hello, I have been having numerous issues with my MacBook recently which I will detail below. These issues have persisted past a full reformat of the drive and reinstallation of the OS (though I did reconnect iCloud and other internet accounts). I am running OS X 10.11 El Capitan. I can give console outputs if this helps but am not sure when is best to collect this information. The issues are:

  • Macbook won't go to sleep when open even though energy saver settings are set to one minute, if I manually send it to sleep then the keyboard backlight will go out and the mouse will become unresponsive but the screen remains on.
  • If the Macbook is closed then sometimes it will sleep but when I open it the backlight will remain off, the screen will brighten slightly but remain blank. The keyboard backlight will come on and the fans start up but nothing else happens until I force shutdown and restart.
  • Many applications will bounce for many minutes when I launch them before becoming unresponsive and requiring me to force quit them. Affected applications include: Chrome, Atom, Maps, Photos.
  • Many websites on Safari will not load often or load visually but become unresponsive. Websites affected include: Youtube, Fiverr and especially Google Maps

I am at a loss as to what might be causing these symptoms and would appreciate  any help on this matter. Like I said, I can provide console output if it is helpful.

Many thanks,

Ben
