Hi. Could you please explain a little more what you're doing. Are you using the TV app store, trying to install an app? If the download is being interrupted, there may be a problem with the ATV internet connection.

I upgaded from ATV 1 to ATV 4 and want to re-install apps like netflix, HBO Now, YouTube, HULU, etc. When I navigate to the App store, it lets me get close to the purchased apps then it returns me to the main home screen. It never loses connection but I have had to hit the home button a few times to exit the all grey screen. It doesn't do it all the time. After 20 or so attempts I was able to get the above mentioned apps installed but its really frustrating. Should I try a total reset of the device? Anything else I can try?
How does it work when you try to play a YouTube video? If that's also poor, you should look at your network connection. If it's fine, then you may just be having trouble with iTunes. You could try logging out of iTunes (in Settings) and back in. Be sure your location, timezone, and time are correct for your location.
I just installed one yesterday and I had this exact same problem. If by chance you get it solved it would be great if you could post that update here. I'll do the same
It also sometimes stalls on a grey screen.
I'm having the same issue. Can't even use the device because it goes back to the home screen when you're right in the middle of trying to search, install an app, etc. Very glitchy. I'll probably return it back to Best Buy tomorrow. Remote app doesn't work either.
That will be due to an issue within your network
I have this same issue, and I don't believe it is a network connectivity issue. I have a direct connection to my router (not WiFi), and I have a confirmed 100mb download and 20mb upload on the network. Essentially, the ATV is acting as if someone were pressing "menu" or "back" on the remote every time you scroll over the App Store, TV, or Movies, or any time you select one of those Icons. The only thing I have found is that if you immediately press a button once in that screen, it does not go back to the homescreen
This seems like a software glitch. Can anyone confirm, or advise on a workaround or fix?
Not software related. Internet connection isn't relevant as it would be the local network.
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
Make sure router is up to date
Reboot router and ATV
Test on another network or take to Apple
Thats the best description to this bug. I returned it. Especially after the lackluster response that it was my own network issue.
There is no such widespread issue as a result of a bug. Proper troubleshooting would need to take place because it is a result of the network.
Apple products used to be plug and play. Shouldn't have to to guess as to why a product isn't working correctly and then tell the customer it's their problem it's not working. (Slow decline of Apple I guess)
I had the exact same issue reported by MikeBaker1085 with two separate 64 gig 4th generation Apple TV units purchased from Best Buy. The unit would quickly return to the home screen from the app store, but if I managed to quickly navigate to installing a particular app or using it would not return to the home screen. Still, it was basically unusable. This happened on both WiFi (right next to a reliable router) and ethernet (with two different cables.)
After returning the first unit and seeing the same symptoms with the second one, I noticed that it was running a 9.x operating system. I upgraded it to version 10 and the problem went away.
Hope this helps.
This is a network device, and it isn't about guessing but rather about actually doing some troubleshooting in order to rectify the issue. This would be the case with any such device. However, you seem determined to come here and rant about a bug (that somehow is only impacting a small group of users).
I had the same exact issues!! I also returned my first to Best Buy and was completely frustrated when the second was having the same issue. A software update fixed it right away!!
