how can i determine number of contacts i have

I don't know of a way on the iPhone, but if you have a Mac, you can go to the Contacts app (dock) and scroll to the bottom where you'll find the total.

Same for iCloud.com on your browser, go to app, scroll to the bottom.

You used to be able to scroll to the bottom of your Contacts list on the iPhone and it would list the number of contacts. I'm not sure why that does not work any longer. Seems it stopped a couple of iOS updates ago.
