Q: MacBook Pro not recognizing Flash Drive/USB

Hello all,

I'm reading the posting but am still having issues with connecting external drives (directly to the either USB ports or through the network).

Most recently, I received a new USB Flash Drive that can connect to my iPhone, 12" iPad Pro and even to my older Samsung Galaxy notebook AND when connected to a PC they all read it,  I've even downloaded and installed the App on my iPad and iPhone to read and use the drive ( Mobile Disk, i-USB-Storer).

So I have Apple Care and reached out to them to troubleshoot why and was advised that if it isn't an Apple drive, Time machine unit or basically purchased at a store then they won't support it.

I use and external USB hub to add other USB drives and these work fine.  I've looked at the system report and think I found the unit,  but still does not show up on finder or display on the desktop like the others.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I've been a MAC user for a total of 3 months and have been having a good time with the transition from PC but this is very troubling.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, does the drive so there?

See mount section in 1st linked article.

Hi again, thanks for the links above, not sure what is going on but now, even on the command line I don't see it attached at all. The flash drive does work and I have copied files onto from the PC and still not recognized at all but there is a LED indicator to let me know that it is there and on.  When I reattach the USB hub and another thumb drive both are detected and can be read.

The USB ports work for other items, and the drive is not seen by the system at all.  here is what I find in the command line query,

    mynetwork:~ Darryl$ diskutil list

    /dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

      #:                      TYPE NAME                    SIZE      IDENTIFIER

      0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB    disk0

      1:                        EFI EFI                    209.7 MB  disk0s1

      2:          Apple_CoreStorage Macintosh HD            999.7 GB  disk0s2

      3:                Apple_Boot Recovery HD            650.0 MB  disk0s3

    /dev/disk1 (internal, virtual):

      #:                      TYPE NAME                    SIZE      IDENTIFIER

      0:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD          +999.3 GB  disk1

                                    Logical Volume on disk0s2

                                    2165919A-AA24-49F8-A239-49B5D0C37A37

                                    Unencrypted

    mynetwork:~ Darryl$

Also now when I use the Disk Utility I only see the internal drive and any other USB Drives I attach or detach.  I've restarted the pro and still it does get recognized,  My concern is, it works everywhere else, what if I reformatted the unit to Apple HFS or redid it in FAT32  would it kill the disk and whatever program is on it to control the lightening connector.

I'll keep looking around the chatrooms and other places for some other takes on this but if you know an engineer or programmer that likes a challenge I've got lots.  Thanks again for any suggestions.
