Q: unable to save 8 mm camcorder input on iMovie 10.1.2

I'm trying to import old camcorder videos to iMovie.

Videos are being played on Sony TR33 video 8 mm Handycam (analog) through a Sony TRV 22 hi 8 Handicam (digital). This provides the a/d conversion needed.

Video and audio show correctly in event window when importing. However when I stop importing nothing is saved.

As a side note, if I import a video from the trv22 (digital) alone it seems to work as it breaks the clips into individual events based on time.

Literature seems to say a pop-up widow asking for where to store the video should appear when importing. However I fail to see that.

Have iMac with El Capitan 10.11.6

iMovie 10.1.2

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

This issue has appeared in the discussions both here and in FCPX. The cause of the lack of recording is due to the lack of timecode which iMovie requires. In pass through mode there is no time code from the TRV 22. The solution is to record the Handicap video in the TRV 22 and then import to iMovie.

Or you could try QuickTime Player Record function.

How to use QuickTime Player - Apple Support

You would then need to transfer this into iMovie.

With this method or Jim's method you will not get individual scene breaks but one long clip.

You get scene breaks on a tape that is recorded on the TRV22 as these are added onto the tape each time you start and stop recording.

    Thanks Jim.

I kind of suspected that was the cause but wasn't sure. I also have a fairly good VHS-DVD recorder and could run the TR33 through that and get a DVD.  I have over 100 tapes to convert plus an equal number of VHS.
