Sep 12, 2016 12:55 PM in response to chuckd83by MichelPM,You can always use Skype for the iPad and tell everyone else you know that uses Facetime to also download the Skype app.
I have both. Works out fine.
Not everyone I know has Apple devices and uses Facetime.

Sep 12, 2016 1:03 PM in response to MichelPMby chuckd83,Facetime is much better than Skype. I have an Apple device and so does the person I'd like to Facetime with.

Sep 12, 2016 1:03 PM in response to chuckd83by MichelPM,I have a 64 GB storage iPad 2 (with approx. 20 GBs of free storage left and iOS 7 and 9 have been working just fine on it.
The last iOS 9.3.5 emergency secutity update has actually made my iPad 2 run much faster than it had previously.
It was a fairly noticeable uptick in response and performance.
I am not sure why, though, but my iPad 2 is running VERY well on the latest iOS 9.
I did skip iOS 8 completely as it seemed iOS 8 had more issues for iPad 2 users than either iOS 7 or 9 did.

Sep 12, 2016 1:09 PM in response to chuckd83by MichelPM,Without upgrading your iOS, Facetime is not available to you.
Both you and your friend need to be using Skype.
What is your major problem using Skype?
Skype works fine on iDevices.
I never have any issues using this with my family members who use Skype.
Use Skype.

Sep 12, 2016 1:25 PM in response to chuckd83by MichelPM,If you bought another iPad 2 just to stay on iOS 6, then you are outta luck using Facetime.
Facetime was introduced to the iDevice world when iOS 7 was released.
If you decide, at any point, to upgrade your iPad 2 to the latest iOS 9.3.5 (which is all you can do), the best and most reliable way to do this is to connect to a computer running the lastest version of iTunes (vers. 12.4.3) and upgrade through iTunes.
If you have ANY issues after upgrading your iPad 2, you can follow my list of tips and possible solutions here.

Sep 12, 2016 1:30 PM in response to MichelPMby chuckd83,You said your iPad 2 is running great on iOS 9, but make an entire guide on iPad 2's running slow on iOS 9?
And I have Facetime on my iOS 6 iPad. It worked great. It was not release on iOS 7.

Sep 12, 2016 1:53 PM in response to chuckd83by MichelPM,Yeah,
My iPad 2 IS running great!
That is because I have turned off and shut down any crawp that the iPad 2 can't handle.
I don't need all of the motion graphics eye candy that iOS 9 introduced.
Plus, there are lots of optimisation you can set in iOS to keep iOS slim and trim that doesn't pull escessively on any iDevices hardware/software resources.
I have created that guide for the others who keep complaining that every iOS version, since iOS 7,has slowed down their iPad 2.
I have everything optimised on all of my iDevices (so all my iDevices run as fast as possible), iPad 2 included, and my iPad 2 DOES run great!
There are plenty of things you can do to get iOS to run a WHOLE lot better on both older AND newer iDevices!

As of April 16, 2014, FaceTime ceased working on earlier versions of iOS which had previously supported it (iOS 4, 5 & 6). This was because the client-side certificate used to authenticate a genuine Apple device with FaceTime servers expired on that date. Apple chose not to release an update to this certificate for all devices for which a newer major iOS version (with a new, valid certificate) was available. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FaceTime
All we can do here is give you our best opinion. If your don't want to upgrade it is your choice and your loss.
