Q: Is there a way to move music off of my IPOD 120GB onto my MB Pro?  Trying to consolidate all my tunes onto the laptop and then reload back onto the IPOD.  TY.

Hi, I have an older v of the IPOD 120GB.  Over the years I have downloaded a couple thousand songs onto the IPOD from hard CD's and purchased music from Pandora.  When I have attempted to consolidate the tunes on the IPOD and my MacBook Pro I can't seem to make it happen.  The message always comes up that I have to reset the IPOD and erase all my tunes in order for it to sync with MB Pro.  If I do this I will lose dozens of CD tunes that I have downloaded in the past.  Some are lost and some are scratched.  I also have thousands of photos, many of which were converted from film to digital years ago and I don't have access to that data anymore.

How can I download all the files on my IPOD to my MB Pro and combine with my ITUNE library (and then reload the comprehensive file back to the IPOD).

Thx.

By design, iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from iTunes library to iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod music transfer," you should get some links, including an article by CNET on the topic.

Photos are a separate consideration.  You can off-load them using your computer's file manager IF a particular setting was enable WHEN you synced photos to iPod.  That setting is on iPod's Photos settings screen in iTunes.  It's a checkbox for Include full-resolution photos.  If that option was enabled, you can Enable disk use and look in the Photos folder on iPod's disk, to find original photo files.  Otherwise, during syncing, iTunes optimizes photos to fit iPod's small low-resolution screen (reducing storage used on iPod), and consolidates photo data into a special database.  You cannot directly access that data using a file manager.  There may be third-party utilities that can extract individual photos stored on iPod, but they are probably low-resolution versions of your original photos.

NOTE:  Songs (and other media) purchased from iTunes Store can be downloaded again at no cost.

You will need to use a 3rd party tool to extract the music from your iPod onto your MBP.
