Q: Podcast feed broken but fixed, now how to refresh

Been working on my podcast feed and with a misplaced redirect, things got screwed up on my iTunes page. Only shows one show. When I go into my Podcasts Connect is says there is an error

Can’t parse your feed. Invalid XML: Error on line 8: The content of elements must consist of well-formed character data or markup.

I fixed the feed, but the error is still there and says it was refreshed on 9-10. So apparently nothing else I can do, will it refresh automatically?

Your feed is at http://feeds.feedblitz.com/dothewoopodcast . This is served up differently by your server depending on what application asks for it. It works OK in iTunes when subscribing and appears in FeedValidator with only minor errors. Accessing it in FireFox (my default RSS reader) it brings up a web page. Podcasts Connect fails validation and is presumably being served with the web page version, hence the failure. This is a case of the hosting service being too clever.

However, as you don't need to access it in Podcasts Connect this isn't a problem. When you subscribe in iTunes three episodes appear (the feed has many episodes but only three have playable media); while new episodes appear almost immediately when subscribing, the Store caches the feed and checks in some sort of rotation, so new episodes normally take 1-2 days to appear. Given all this it's probable that the Store will show all three episodes in the next couple of days, as long as it doesn't fall over this system of serving up a web page to some clients.

Thanks, there should be 27 shows, but I may have mucked that up. Am using Blubrry so going to get on with their support tomorrow and figure this out hopefully. Thanks again!

The feed contains ten episodes, of which only three have playable media: iTunes does not display the other. Your associated web page has ten episodes on the first page, with a further two pages containing a number more (I didn't check how many had playable media).

Evidently your podcast creation method is, as many do, limiting the number of episodes which appear in the feed, moving older ones to an archive page once the limit is reached and new episodes added. There is usually a setting to increase this - currently it appears to be set to ten.

The problem with mixing episodes with and without media is that when the feed is limited to a number of total episodes the number which appear in iTunes will be much smaller - in this case three out of ten. It's better to have a separate feed for actual podcast episodes.

Thanks for those insights. I am going to just get rid of those other posts on the site... and I will have a separate feed for them on my new site. Great tips here, again thanks so much!
