Q: Time machine problem since upgrade to El Capitan

Upgraded imac and macbook pro to El Caiptan but now have problems with time machine.  Have external HDD connected to i mac and both devices previously backed up to this but now not an available as when click Select Backup Disk on MBP time machine  - please help!  Can see and access HDD through finder and can access files on imac from MBP and vice versa, just problem with time machine.

    El Capo increased security such that it is difficult to backups over the network to another Mac. I recently tested this and was disappointed at how unreliable it has become.

     

    I do not see any easy way to fix it. So I recommend you bypass the problem.

     

    eg. Buy a Time Capsule. Or a more expensive but more reliable solution.. a Synology NAS.

     

    Or go the cheaper route and buy a second USB drive and backups locally. Time Machine is less and less reliable and using it with local drive.. plugged directly into the computer simply works a lot better than any other method.

     

    A solution I have not tried is buying OS X server and loading that onto one computer. This has a lot of extra functionality for using a central computer as TM target. The server extension is cheap enough. However on balance I went for synology.
