Q: Force photo download

How can I make Photos download on command?  Photos on my iPod takes 30 minutes or longer to upload to the cloud and download to my Photos on my Mac.

MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

How are you uploading?  My Photo Stream? iCloud Photo Library?

My Photo Stream is supposed to upload when the iPod is connected to power and properly charged, and connected to Wi-Fi. The Camera.app should be closed.

Photos on your Mac will download new photos from iCloud, after it has synced all new photos imported to your Mac to iCloud.

My iPod automatically uploads when connected to wi-fi.  That seems to happen quickly.  It's the downloading onto my Mac that is slow.  I've timed three photos I just took on my iPod and it's been 30 minutes and my Mac says it's just now starting to download.

Did you see any notices about "updating" before the download began? The mac will first sync all your edits and other changes, before it will start the download. It helps to keep the Mac running, so it can continually update and sync all changes whil you are not using Photos, and is ready to download, when you upload new photos to iCloud.

All I saw and still see is three cloud boxes and "Downloading 3 items."  I don't have super fast internet but still fast enough for most stuff.  My iPod has finished uploading 30 minutes ago.

It's now been over an hour and still no download of my photos to my Mac.  Although I modified some photos on my Mac and they uploaded to the cloud and downloaded to my iPod/iPad almost instantly.  Maybe I've had too many bad words about Photo app and it's getting even with me?

At the bottom of the Photos view what is the status (or in the Photos preferences ==> iCloud)?

There is nothing showing now as status.  Just three clouds.  It's been six hours plus since I took the photos on my iPod and no download to my Mac.  The photos downloaded to my iPad just fine.

there sure is - it either says updated just now or uploading n items

No idea what you mean by "three clouds" - that is never displayed in either of those tow locations

On each device nothing is downloaded until every upload is complete - what happens on one device has no effect on another device

I have three boxes that should have my photos in them.  Instead there is only a cloud.  Here's a screen shot from just now.

So the status is "updating" - thanks for answering

Nothing will down load until the update is finished

Looking at your screenshot - how are you using Dropbox?  Has Dropbox been enabled to automatically import photos or screenshots?

Your Mac is not fully charged. My Mac stops syncing with iCloud, if the battery is that low.

I do not recognize the menulet in your main menu bar to the right of Dropbox, sorry. Which tool do you have installed, that is showing this menu extra in the main menu bar?

Do you have any third party items installed, in addition to Evernote and Dropbox?

Nothing goes into Dropbox unless I place it there.  The other icon is for CleanMyMac.  Photos is still "Updating..." as of this note.  I think I will reboot.  Seems like that was a suggestion from another posting for problems using the cloud.

I rebooted and the photos showed up immediately.

The other icon is for CleanMyMac.

Have you used CleanMyMac to remove duplicates from your Photos Library?  The trial version I tested damaged my iPhoto Library and the test Photos Library badly.

If you let it clean your Photos Library, it will have deleted all high resolution originals, replaced them by the lesser quality edited versions, and may have relinked them incorrectly. Photos usually cannot repair this.

In that case restore your Photos Library from your last Time Machine backup you made before cleaning the library.
