Content providers on Apple TV 3rd generation?

I'm thinking of getting an Apple TV or a Roku. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the content providers available for the different models of Apple TV? I am looking for a way to find a viewing / educational solution for a young family who are not native English speakers to help expose their young child to English language content.

They do not own any TV right now, but they do own iPads and iPhones.

They are rather financially limited right now.

Thanks in advance!

Hi AQuestionHere,

I understand that you're curious about the content providers available for the Apple TV. I know it's nice to know what is available to you before buying a new product, so I'm happy to provide some information around this.

Currently, the only model of Apple TV that Apple sells is the 4th generation. You can see some of the content providers available on the Apple TV here:

the providers for Apple TV have their software embedded into the OS, they are not "downloadable" later, either they have a "portal" when you unbox or download an updated OS or they don't. Depending on the provider they may offer subscription based on you paying through Apple, an existing account directly with them or an account through your cable provider only meaning they are only available if you pay your cable provider for them, service not obtainable through apple and not directly to them either, in which case you need to provide your cable service and your customer ID from the cable service.

and while Apple only sells the "4" the previous generation of Apple TV is still available for new purchase from many brick and mortar stores and mail order for a fraction of the cost ($69 new, $49 referb) if you don't need a gyroscope in your remote and can live with Dolby 5 instead of 7.
