Search by date not functioning correctly

I tried searching by month to look at all photos taken in "December" - however only about half of the photos actually taken in December show up. I looked through the ones showing up and not and couldn't find a difference, both were taken by my iPhone and had the original dates in the info. Any thought on why some photos are being left out of search?
