My macbook air storage only shows a blue bar of 'other', and it is almost full and I have no idea what is taking up all that storage. I don't have any movies, not all that much music, not many photos. Mostly what I do on here is use the internet.
1. Why does it only show 'other'?
2. How do I find out what is taking up all my storage?
Boot up in Safe mode then reboot normally as fellas rebuilt spotlight could see ordinal usage of SSD.

There is a bug in the program that generates that display so it cannot be relied upon. Sometimes, but not always, a Spotlight reindex will correct the display:

For accurate information, download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes.
