Q: back up my macbook air

I just got a macbook air and I'm looking for the best and most cost efficient way to keep my photos/videos.

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    It is better to have two backups ready.

     

    1. Use Carbon Copy Cloner backup software and an external HD to create a bootable backup.

        Carbon Copy Cloner costs about 40 dollars.

    2. Use built-in Time Machine application to backup or restore your Mac.

         Buy an external HD with three times the storage capacity compared to the internal SSD.

    dominic23 suggestion is basically what I do except I add one more layer of protection by cycling two TM backup drives between work and home. In other words, Friday I take a backup drive to work and leave it there all week. When I go home I take the one that had been there the previous week and use it to back up for a week. This way if disaster strikes at home I still have a backup off-site that’s no more than a week old.

     

    I also use iCloud as a repository for my photos.
