Is this an Apple board or a third-party version (like Mattias, Logitech, Kensinton, etc)?
If an Apple board, it is wired or wireless?
If wireless, have you tried fresh batteries?
The current wireless Apple boards seem to allow some disassembly that might help with cleaning. The aluminum wired boards offer no practical way to disassemble without destroying the board. Keyboards get cheaper and cheaper and are moving toward the same category as toothbrushes--use for a while and replace when it stops working.

Sep 14, 2016 5:40 AM in response to Allan Jonesby FernandoWhittaker,Hi Allan
It is an apple keyboard, wired, I use it with my iMac, I just plugged it into the macbook and it's working ok, I'm typing with it at the moment, it seems to be an intermittent fault, I thought because all the keys are in a line it may be some kind of settings or software issue...

Sep 14, 2016 7:59 AM in response to FernandoWhittakerby Allan Jones,Thanks for the update. I guess it's a waiting game if it's intermittent. If it starts again on the iMac, immediately take it to the MacBook Pro and test.
Have you looked at the point where the cord enters the keyboard to see if the sheathing is frayed of bulged? A wiring fault could cause intermittent appearance of symptoms. A slight change in tension on the cord could make the symptoms change.
If the board consistently works on another computer, an SMC reset on the iMac may help. Instructions here:

Fortunately the wired aluminum boards are not expensive. Used ones here:

That's the only option is the faiult proves to be within the keyboard.
