after an iOS upgrade, got locked out at activation lock

I used to have an AppleID which I don't have access to anymore (I think somebody was able to use it as I can't recognise the email address that Apple sent the key code to reset password).

Now, I can not unlock the device (Ipad 2) as the Apple ID used to lock it is the old one. How can I disconnect this device from that Apple ID? I guess that person might have been receiving reactivation pass code over the last few days.

Please help.. Thanks.

The only way around the activation lock is to use the Apple ID and password used to set up the iPad.

Has this always been your iPad or did you get it used? If it's yours you can poke around here Apple ID - Official Apple Support

ano see if you can recover it. If it was second hand then you need that original Apple ID.

I've tried setting the Ipad to factory default but it would still prompt for the old Apple Id and since I don't know that email address, no way will I be able to use this Ipad !

it's been with me and have bought it brand new. I just can't understand why anyone can use an existing Apple Id and link it to his/her email address.
