post-HDMI hookup changes to desktop on laptop

After using a Mini port to connect to an HDMI external screen, my desktop is now weirdly condensed. All icons and fonts are tiny, and the internet, email and all files open in smaller windows. Any help in restoring the laptop to its regular settings?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Hello katzenbergere,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you connected to an HDMI display and now the desktop resolution is looking strange. The system probably hasn't reset to the normal resolution, this sounds like a NVRAM reset is in order.

1. Shut down your computer.

2. Press the power button.

3. Immediately press and hold the Command, Option, P and R keys.

4. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime a second time.

5. Release the keys and let the computer continue to start up.

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

Best regards.
