Are there issues with iOS 10 in a mixed iOS 9 / OS X El Capitan environment?

I would like to update my iPhone 6 to iOS 10. However, at the same time I will not be able to update my iPad 3 (currently on iOS 9.3.5) and also not my iMac from El Capitan to Sierra later this month as they are no longer supported by the new operating systems.

My question: Are there any compatibility issues with respect to synchronizing my data across the three devices if I update my iPhone to iOS 10 with the other devices still running on iOS 9.3.5 and OS X El Capitan?

AFAIK, updating the phone should not impact the iPad 3 with regard to syncing with iTunes, using iCloud Photo Library or other iCloud syncing options. If everything works now, it is going to work when the phone is sunning iOS 10.

iOS 10 will require OS X 10.9 for syncing with iTunes, but you can still sync the iPad 3 running iOS 9.3.5 with your Mac as well.

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

  • Mac: OS X v10.9 or later
  • PC: Windows 7 or later
  • iTunes 12.5 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
