Music: Why are Star Ratings gone???

Apple, I have been using iTunes since 1.0, and Apple music players since the first iPod. The primary way I sort my music is by rating all of my songs, so I can quickly make playlists based on my five-star songs (for example). And I frequently listen to playlists of my unrated songs, so I can rate them appropriately.

This functionality is gone in iOS 10.

I used to tap the song title (in iOS 8 and earlier) or the album art (in iOS 9) to bring up the Star rating for a song. It was quick and easy, and allowed me to rate my songs while I'm away from home. As of iOS 10, tapping the album artwork does...nothing. The Star functionality has been removed completely.

Can you tell me why this was done? You have removed an essential part of the music experience for no good reason. And it's not like that operation has been replaced with anything. It's just gone.

This is making me regret upgrading to iOS 10, and I've been looking forward to this release for months. This is taking away something I've used religiously since the very first iPod.

Please, bring back Star Ratings on iOS 10! Please!

After giving it some thought, I think Hearts can be quite effective as well. You don't need 5+1 options (Stars+unrated), 2+1 options (Hearts+unclassified) can almost do the same.

  • To make a "best-of" list from your favorite artist, make a smart playlist and select "hearts only".
  • To make a larger playlist that includes unrated songs, make a smart playlist and select "not disliked". This is your larger selection, which becomes smaller when you dislike a song. This is the way to "process" or "filter" new music, while keeping the best.
  • To make a list of your top favorites from your whole library, add your play count in the mix.

To "upgrade" from stars to hearts, make a playlist with your favorites, select all and choose "Heart".

Actually, it's now fixed with the latest version of iOS.

When you want to rate a song, as it's playing, you hit the three red dots at the bottom right of the screen, and then in the dialogue box that appears at the bottom is a field 'Rate Song'.

It's clunkier than in previous versions (where you simply tapped the album artwork to bring up the ratings), but at least it's back!

This is correct, but first you must go into Settings/ Music and select "Show Star Ratings", otherwise you won't see the "Rate Song" option when you tap the three dots.

Easily one of the worst decisions made by Apple in the latest iterations of iOS. I have spent scores of hours rating my 211 gig library, and organizing a lot of my music around ratings. If Apple doesn't change this in the next year, I'm leaving my iPhone and my imprisonment by crappy Apple software behind forever. CHANGE THIS BACK APPLE! NOW!!!

I don´t have iOS X yet, but if the star rating its gone, will be one of the reason to leave iTunes.....

Im having problems to see the stars ratings on my library: 200gb of music which I methodically rate in all this years....

IT JUST A SHAME to hide them, to force us to use "loves" or whatever they want to do, but I really will be VERY VERY UNHAPPY if this is not fixed in future, I think this is a TOTALLY SHAME.....

First, you're really not addressing Apple here, this is a user-to-user forum for helping each other. Occasionally Apple employees will chime in, but don't expect that. The proper way to get their attention is to submit feedback:

Like you, I've been a long-time iTunes user and rely heavily on song ratings to have a finer control over what gets synced to my devices. Loved, Disliked, and <unclassified> are not sufficient if that is Apple's intention now. So please provide feedback at the link above, hopefully enough people will complain loud enough for star ratings to come back to iOS in a future update.

For now you can still rate songs in iTunes, and you can use Siri to rate songs on your iPhone (not very practical though). Hopefully this was just an oversight, but I suspect not since all iOS 10 betas had no star rating accessibility.

I have also been using the star ratings to manage my smart playlists for close to 9 years. It was bad enough when the ability to rate songs was taken off of the lock screen forcing me to navigate into the app for every song I rated, but now it is gone altogether.

It looks like we have to choose between getting a third party music app or creating some new playlists such as 'new 5 star songs' and assign the songs to the playlists for updating later in iTunes.

This is not a feature, it is a bug.

Yes, Loved and Disliked is not fine enough. In fact, I have used the bpm field to rate the songs from 0 to 100. 0 is unrated, 1 is I don't want to hear it again, 40 is 2 stars, 60 is 3 stars, 80 is 4 stars and 90 bpm is 5 stars. This has the benefit of allowing me to grade songs with the same star rating higher or lower within the range. A song has to be a very special favorite of mine to get a 99.

This has the added benefit of backing up my star ratings which is saved in the itl file and not in the songs. I once lost my itl file and had to restart grading my songs. It is also portable between applications with the tags in your song files.

Thanks for the link. I'm going there now.

The functionality hasn't gone completely - it's just been hidden. If you want to rate a song on your iOS device, you have to start Siri and say, "Give this song a rating of [whatever]".

The problem with this is:

1. Siri doesn't always understand the command

2. The music pauses whilst you're interacting with Siri

3. You cannot view the ratings of any songs.

This is a mess.

Hoping Apple sorts this out in a future release.

Siri has trouble with 2 stars which it hears as "to stars" despite the context. Remember when Siri was heuristic?

If you do manage to change the rating, there is an Open Music link on the Siri screen. If you touch it, the music stops for a second time and Siri will ask you to unlock the phone. Touch somewhere else (I think) or press the home button to avoid this.
