Just updated to IOS 10 and text replacement is not working

I faced this problem twice when upgrading, and I faced it now with my new iPhone X, and I tried most of the famous answers, and the one that worked with me both times is that I had my iPads (two) updated to the latest iOS version, and once they update, my long list of text replacments magically appears the next morning in my phone.

That helped! Also, on the Mac, highlight the text replacements and drag to desktop. Delete them, wait 1 minute, drag the .plist back into the window, and then reboot any iOS devices.

Thank you it is now working, l rely on them so much, as l am not a great texter.

I solved this one by inserting two spaces before typing the shortcut and then deleting them after the shortcut worked. It's a bit clunky but better than having to type out by hand.

"space space SC return" where SC is the shortcut.

I have two iPhone 6. I can totally restore on one but not the other. I had to get the one that doesn't restore my shortcuts unlocked. The phone wasn't accepting my password. I lost my pictures, etc. Now I can't get my text replacements. I tried it all. As above, I turned on / off the iCloud, the iPhone, my anger, etc. No luck.

Guys, they're back. All. Must have close to 1000. Lots! Here's what I did (maybe?). I have my iPhones & iPad. I opened the iPad where I really never start a new text replacement. I searched to see if the hideous 'omw' appeared there. It was there but 'suddenly' the replacements appeared on 'this' iPhone, the iPhone I'm at present & with the missing replacements.

I can't say why it happened but they appeared. It might have been that the iPad unlocked something. BTW, I also have a mini iPad. No problem there, of course. Possible suggestion: open up all devices using the text replacement.

I'm weighing in here to corroborate the problem. I went from iOS 9.3.5 on my 6s+ directly to 10.2, hoping that iOS 10 bugs would be shaken out. I had some minor problems with 10.2, like Assistive Touch being unresponsive after waking up the screen, but it was still livable. Then, after 4 weeks of using all my text replacement shortcuts without a hitch, all of them vanished. I don't use iCloud for anything other than Find My iPhone. I used text replacement shortcuts probably a dozen times every day all the while iOS 10.2 was installed, just like I used text replacement shortcuts a dozen times every day under 9.3.5. I followed a couple of suggestions in this thread to resolve the problem and none of them worked. I threw the towel in and re-entered my text replacement shortcuts.

I recently experienced the same problem & did every step suggested in all the replies i.e. Turning my phone on and off and adding text replacements and turning settings off. Nothing worked. However, I turned predictive setting on and automatically my text replacement was back. Hope this helps !

Hi there, all my text replacements were saved in iCloud and properly showing up when I got my new iPhone 7, but they simply wouldn't work!

Found out the problem was the 3rd party keyboard, gBoard by Google.

Gboard is great! But it's not supporting text replacements that start with the @ symbol :-/

Example: omw does expand to "on my way" but @mye should expand to my@emailaddress.com. Not happening...

So I changed those ones from something like @mye to xmye and it works.

Since the iCloud trick didn't work, you can try restoring your device from a back up. That may work. Or if you have another device connected to your icloud, you could see if it has your replacements sync'd so at least you are working from scratch.

Check out Settings > General >Keyboard>Text Replacement and see if you can re-add. You can also make sure Text Replacement is enabled and the respective Keyboard functions are enabled, such as Auto Capitalization.

Hey, I had the same Issue, and I finelly could Fix it.

As I see, it is not a problem with an specific version of the operating system. It could happen with any update.

I had my 3 devices (Macbook Pro, iPad, iPhone) syncyng properly until one day I noticed the list of the Text Replacements in the macbook was missing, but were still showing in the iPhone and iPad.

I noticed that if I added a new replacement or modify an existing on in the iPhone or the iPad, it would show on the other Device, but not in the Macbook, and just sometimes, if I added a new replacement in the macbook, it will show on my other devices, sometimes as duplicates (in some occations i had to turn off and turn on the iPhone or ipad to make to see the new modification ). However if I modify something in the iPhone or ipad, it would affect the macbook.

This is what I did to fix it:

0. Make sure that the iCloud Drive>options>System preferences is active (turn it off and turn it on again just in case).

1. I created all my text replacements in the macbook pro from 0. (some of them where showing as duplicates in the other devices).

2. I made a back up of them by selecting them all and dragging them to the desktop of the macbook.

3. I deleted ALL the replacements from the list in the macbook.

4. I deleted ALL the replacements from the iPhone (i verify that in the ipad were also deleted).

5. Once i had no text replacement on any Device, i dragged my backup to the list on the macbook.

6. I turned off and turned on all my 4 devices (I did it just in case)

7. Now my 3 devices had the same text replacements, and any modification made on any of them was syncing perfectly across the macbook, ipad and iPhone.

I strongly recomend to have a backup of the text replacements in your macbook, cause this error I believe could happen with any update.

A person in our office had this problem as soon as he changed phones. We tried most of the solutions here, but nothing worked. However, a soft reset fixed the issue. That's where you press and hold the power and home buttons until the phone restarts. (Power and left-side volume buttons on iPhone 7.)

Thank you! This is the solution that worked! I'm on iOS 9.3.3 and tried the other solutions. Your method brought back all my text replacements.

A note to other users: when I "powered down immediately" as with this method, I manually powered it down by holding the sleep/power button and then sliding the slider that pops up. Some might think that "immediately" means to hold the sleep button and home button in until your phone restarts but I experienced my success by manually powering down the phone.
