Q: How do I speed up my MacPro 2009 after the El Capitan update?

I just did the El Capitan OS install on my MacPro ( 2009 ) machine, and since I did it has run seriously slow. Anyone out there know of a way to speed it back up, besides getting a new mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already ran disk utility, cleared out some cache files, did the basic diagnostic stuff. Did some power re-setting, pram, etc... nothing is helping.

Mac Pro, iOS 10, 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Slow in almost every aspect. Beach balls everywhere, simple tasks now take forever. Opening, running and closing applications takes a long time now. Huge delays with every click or command. My mac was quick 2 days ago, and now with the new El Capitan OS update, it seems to have taken a crap on me. See scan results below. Thanks in advance!!!

    Problem: Beachballing

    Description:

Just installed El Capitan OS and my mac pro ( 2009-ish ) seems to be running really slow now. Beach balls all over the place, huge delays in opening, running and closing applications, simple tasks are now time consuming, etc… Losing patience big time.

Uninstall "Intego". Your Mac will not operate properly with such garbage installed. Use its uninstaller, which was included with its downloaded installation package.

    If needed:

Also, you may find the only 6 GB or memory is limiting.

To also speed up you can install an SSD in one bay using a sled made for 2 1/2 inch drives

Hey guys. So I have completely removed/un-installed the Intego Virus protection products/applications. And it is still as slow as it was before I did this. Maybe a slight improvement, but I can't really tell. Just to open a PNG screenshot takes about 12 seconds. Used to be instant. The new scan report says the Performance is now "Good" - but it isn't really faster than even an hour ago. Simple things take a while to do, like opening a file or a folder or an application. And you can imagine trying to run Photoshop... takes forever to do program tasks. There has to be a way to speed this up to how it was before I installed the El Capitan OS. Any other ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just ran a new scan from EtreCheck. Results are as follows:

    EtreCheck version: 3.0.3 (307)

    Report generated 2016-09-13 16:12:39

Uninstalling "anti-virus" junk alone is often sufficient, but it is just the first step in troubleshooting an ailing Mac.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.

Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.

If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.

Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.

To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.

Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.

One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.

Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.

Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

Check some of your Spotlight preferences. Under Search Results, disable Spotlight Suggestions, Bookmarks and History, and Bing Web Searches. You could also go into Accessibility and turn off transparency.

This ought to help some, but you have other issues to address as well. Others have mentioned that more RAM would help. But you also appear to have only one small internal hard drive installed, possibly the drive that shipped with your Mac Pro, to which you have probably already applied a series of OS upgrades. It is possible that this drive is beginning to fail. I would install a large, fast new hard drive in one of the empty bays, and try installing El Capitan from scratch on that drive. If you get zippier performance with the clean install on the new drive, that would indicate that you might have either a failing drive (the 640 GB drive) or stuff carried over from previous systems that doesn't get along well with El Capitan. If you are running Adobe apps, your current 640GB drive is not adequate for optimal performance. ID and PS need lots of free disk space for recovery (ID) or scratch disk space (PS). You can get 4TB 7200 rpm drives for under $175. OWC (macsales.com) is a good source for RAM. I can't tell what you are using to back up your system, perhaps the small external drive, but it looks like you have been squeaking by with a pretty minimal setup.

El Capitan is much more greedy about memory compared to previous versions of OS X. I personally consider 8GB to therefore be the minimum and the more the better.

Because you have both a lower amount of RAM i.e. 6GB and you are running from a traditional spinning hard disk this has a double-whammy. With less memory El Capitan is more likely to swap items out of RAM to the hard disk and back again - a process called 'paging' to and from 'virtual memory'. With a hard disk being slower than RAM and slower than an SSD this means this process itself is also slower and as mentioned with less RAM it happens more often.

Therefore add more RAM which will reduce the amount of swapping to/from virtual memory and also consider getting an SSD drive to use as your boot drive.

See https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory?_ga=1.12252340.1471978174. 1388397850#1066-memory for details of memory upgrades.

See https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/mac-pro/2009-2012 for details of SSD drives.

Note: The Acelssior is much faster than the Mercury but of course costs more.

Other companies will sell similar products and possibly cheaper, your free to search them out.

One great thing about Apple and it's products - is the people who use and operate them - how awesome they are and willing to provide help to others. I can't thank you ALL enough for the responses and suggestions I have received for getting this old Mac back up to speed. I followed almost every reply/suggestion and I'm happy to say that it is back to speed. Thanks god...

Wish I could buy all of you a drink! I hope one day I can provide help to someone just the same as you all did for me today.

    Cheers guys, and thanks again!!!!
