iOS 10 SMS and iMessage notification issues

Hello all,

Having some issues with SMS and iMessage notification since upgrading to iOS 10. The issue is that sometimes there will be no sound or vibration or anything when I receive a message. I will just happen to pick up the phone and there will be a banner on the lock screen. And before anyone asks, it's not that I've been away from the phone, or I didn't hear it go off...there was just no notification. It's as if the phone was in DND (which it wasn't).

The other thing is, I NEVER get a notification when I am sent an iMessage from a sender that is email address only (such as from a wifi only iPad). In this situation, my phone never plays a sound, never vibrates...but you open up the lock screen and there is a new message banner sitting there...like I said before - just like the phone is in DND...which it is not.

This problem is happening on both mine and my wife's phone. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys

I had the exact same problem and in total frustration struggled a whole day only to put my phone on and off and just happen to try and turn it back on and it didn't want to come back on so in panic pressed all the buttons I possibly could and I found a lil switch like button on the top left corner on the side just above the volume buttons and this switch happens to be the silent switch hahaha I feel like an absolute moron. But hey at least I eventually figured it out. Hope it can help some people. I tried everything you guys had on this blog and didn't work. And it was all because of that little switch.

I don't know what blog you're talking about.

The mute switch has been mentioned five other times in this thread, including at the top of this page. If that's you're problem, flipping the switch is the answer. However, for most people in this thread, the problem was one of several other things.

So, I’ve still been having this issue and I’ve noticed it’s in relation to something specific.

This only happens when BLUETOOTH is switched on. As soon as I switch Bluetooth off, I get all my notification sounds back. My boyfriend also noticed he started to have the same issue with his iPhone 6s after updating his iOS.

I’ve seen other forums where people have had the same Bluetooth/notification issue so if you’re still having issues with notifications making no sound/vibration see if your Bluetooth is switched on. If so switch it off and see if that works in getting your sounds back.

I suspect there is a bug there somewhere if you find the same as me, that it’s only affected by Bluetooth being switched on. Apple haven’t given any feedback on it yet however.

Adjust both the “Ringer Level” and the “volume” level. To adjust volume level, hold both the home button and volume up/down both simultaneously.

Worked for me to stop the embarrassing ringing doing church and to restore sound later. Seems to be a different feature relative to my iPhone 6 when I only had to turn down the volume to put it in vibrate mode.

Hope this helps.

I was trying the trick of turning bluetooth off (which works - I reliably get msg tones if bluetooth is off). But then I did as you suggested and removed my email address from the Send&Receive in the msg app. Now I get msg tones & vibration even with bluetooth on - which makes it a much better solution. Congratulations on a great catch! I wonder if Apple knows of this solution.

So here is an update. I believe I may have found a fix to the problem. I used to have my "Send & Receive" in the messages app set up with my phone number and an email address checked off. I unselected the email address and have now received a notifcation for every message I have received thus far. The sample size is kind of small at the moment but before this change it was 50/50 at best.

I'm having the same issue. No notification sounds for anything. I tried different stuff including what you just said. Nothing works.

Whats more frustrating is I have an iPad with same ID and same exact settings that is updated to iOS 10 and that has no issue. I get the sound notifications on that. What's the point of having the phone if I don't know when I get a message?
