iOS 10 SMS and iMessage notification issues

Hello all,

Having some issues with SMS and iMessage notification since upgrading to iOS 10. The issue is that sometimes there will be no sound or vibration or anything when I receive a message. I will just happen to pick up the phone and there will be a banner on the lock screen. And before anyone asks, it's not that I've been away from the phone, or I didn't hear it go off...there was just no notification. It's as if the phone was in DND (which it wasn't).

The other thing is, I NEVER get a notification when I am sent an iMessage from a sender that is email address only (such as from a wifi only iPad). In this situation, my phone never plays a sound, never vibrates...but you open up the lock screen and there is a new message banner sitting there...like I said before - just like the phone is in DND...which it is not.

This problem is happening on both mine and my wife's phone. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue with my husband and thinking I was ignoring him. I just replaced my iPhone today and I have an Apple Watch connected this really helped as long as I have my Apple Watch locked I can get notifications on my iPhone. It was the only option that I would use as I do not want to turn off wrist detection it makes my watch less secure, and I use bluetooth while driving and for my watch. I have had this problem with my text messages not playing the alert sound for several versions. After reading another response I figured it out. I had Allow Notifications on for Messages but had Show in Notification Center off. Once I turned that on my alerts are playing again. This problem has been driving me nuts and now it's fixed.

Of course I don't really want all these messages going into my notification center so I'm going to be filing an issue with my beta feedback app. This used to not work this way and not sure when it changed but it needs to be fixed.

But at least my alert sound is working again. :-)

the problem popped up on my 6S plus all the sudden ... no more SMS, WhatsApp notification. This is very strange. It does work again ONE TIME after the phone has been rebooted and is then silent. I think it started after I activated iMessage on my iPad. Apple screws the basic functionalities of the devices trying to connect all devices with another ... I hope they will fix this ASAP

Hi there have been a few good threads on this issue but will add my own for completeness...

I had a similar issue. i.e not receiving notifications from i-message senders but receiving them ok from SMS/Text users. So problem must be related to i-cloud methinks! Unticked the email options in "Messages" as suggested in recent threads... This still left a couple of my contacts not working. Found that when I selected a single "Contact" then selected the i (information) tag top right of the window... that opened a "do not disturb" option. Unselected that option and I am up and running.

My own personal view that every time I do a iOS update, the damm software goes off and changes some of your settings without you knowing it. It can take a **** of a lot of time and effort to find these changes and put them back!... A real pain!!

This post is for anyone in a similar situation to me... Best of luck!

Mine was also doing the same. I actually bought a new iphone7+ just because my 6+ was doing that, and had the same issues. I tried everything that was suggested here. Nothing worked.

And one time, while I was playing music on Spotify, I turned the volume down to 0 (my settings for sounds is volume ringer does not change with buttons, and no I don't mean that I muted my device with the mute button) because I was talking to someone. And then I noticed none of my notifications for messages and WhatsApp made sounds while it was turned down but just vibrated. And when I'd turn it up full, they'd all make sounds again. It was pretty consistent for me on both phones. Worth a shot for everyone.

I've had this issue since iOS 10 rolled out. When the iPhone's bluetooth is turned on, iMessage and FaceTime notifications become highly inconsistent on the iPad and on any macOS devices. When it's switched off, notifications on all other devices work as normal--as they did under iOS 9 when bluetooth was on or off on the iPhone.

What would help to fix this the right way is if everybody having this problem contacted Apple support and spoke to a senior iOS advisor, linked them to this discussion, and explained that this is a bug that has existed in iOS 10 from the start.

when I read comments about this problem I have the impression that it concerns devices that also transmit alerts (apple watch, fit bits, etc). As a matter of fact my company iPhone, not linked to the watch, has no problem. Looks like iOS does not manage properly alerts on phone and device (I vibrate on the watch then no need to vibrate the phone or ring ... that kind of stuff) ....😕

Some time it works, sometime it does not. It also rings when the phone is not "asleep". When the phone is asleep it does not work, mostly.

It is normal, if your watch is connected to your phone via bluetooth, to receive notification sounds/haptics only through your watch (unless the screen of your phone is on). What people in this thread are discussing is that they aren't getting notification sounds, etc., for iMessages or FaceTime calls on an iPad or a Mac when the bluetooth on the iPhone is turned on, whether connected to a watch or not.
