Q: iOS 10 SMS and iMessage notification issues

Hello all,

Having some issues with SMS and iMessage notification since upgrading to iOS 10. The issue is that sometimes there will be no sound or vibration or anything when I receive a message. I will just happen to pick up the phone and there will be a banner on the lock screen. And before anyone asks, it's not that I've been away from the phone, or I didn't hear it go off...there was just no notification. It's as if the phone was in DND (which it wasn't).

The other thing is, I NEVER get a notification when I am sent an iMessage from a sender that is email address only (such as from a wifi only iPad). In this situation, my phone never plays a sound, never vibrates...but you open up the lock screen and there is a new message banner sitting there...like I said before - just like the phone is in DND...which it is not.

This problem is happening on both mine and my wife's phone. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear it worked for you. Unfortunately, this is not the case on my side. I know the DND-feature and it is NOT enabled. Just turned it on and off again to make sure it's not enabled without showing the moon symbol.

Status: All Incoming SMS and iMessages are still silent. I only receive notifications on my apple watch.

I am really happy because I fixed my problem . You need to do just " Force restart"

If you don't know haw can do it just  follow this link  :    Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
    • On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Thanks, HoppyPaynts - that was exactly my problem. Appears it got turned on by IOS upgrade on both my iphone and ipad. Hope this works for other people too because I know how frustrating these random glitches can be. Well done!

I'm having the same issue on my iPhone 7 Plus. Seems intermittent.

Been happening for the past couple of weeks. Even now my friend just texted me and her first text came through with the notification sound and the following 3 texts straight after had no sound at all. The phone was next to me so it's only because I was waiting for her reply I even checked my phone. One text came through while I had the phone in my hand. Vibrated but no sound.

i alao have an issue with the lock sound also. Whenever Ive had my phone on so not disturb and I switch the DND off, the lock sounds stop working. Even re-booting the phone doesn't always fix this.

ive tried everything that I've found that's been suggested online and it's still not working properly. It's driving me nuts!!

I had this issue on my previous iPhone 6 after I updated to the last iOS 9 version, so I'm wondering if it's a software issue/bug or a glitch in a previous back up.

Anyone had anyfurther joy with this yet?

I have spent about 4 hours on the phone with Apple support and they also told me they hadn't heard any reports of this. I have reset network settings, turned iMessage off and on again, wiped and restored from an archived backup, wiped and manually put everything back on the phone, turned notifications off and on again, turned off show in notification center, I even set up a new iTunes account and nothing has resolved the issue. This is definitely a software issue because it is doing it on my 6S plus, my new 7, and my old SE. I even signed out of iMessage so everything had to come through as SMS and still the issue persists. I have also found that my Facebook Messenger notifications are not working either. I would really like it if Apple could get this fixed, this is causing me some major issues with missing important and often time sensitive messages. Ahh!! Frustrated!

I was having this same issue.

I tried all the suggestions from the replies and it still was not working.

I then tried signing out of iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, and Apple Music and signed back in after a restart.

    Nothing worked.

Then I noticed I had a small crescent moon only next to my wife's messages when I backed out to the "Messages" view in iMessage.

I went into the info tab in my wife's messages and noticed there's a separate DND selection per contact you can select.

I never selected this, but it was somehow checked off.

After disabling, I was able to get messages and notifications again.

Hope this helps someone else with the same problem.

I am having the same problem with both my iPhone 6 and my iPad, since the update no notificatio sounds for messages or text or mail unless the iPad is unlocked, if it's locked no sound to notify me that there is a new message or email waiting

This is just the Do Not Disturb function that you had switched on.

It isn't that at all for me. The phone isn't on DND, it isn't on silent/vibrate etc. The sound is on (I've double checked all this just to ensure I'm not going insane!).

So I'll have a text message come through with the usual with sounds and vibrations, then another text off the same person 1 minute later I get no sound or vibration alert at all. The phone is sitting next to me with no changes made to it since the text they sent me shortly before.

It's completely intermittent and I have the same issue with the lock and keyboard click sounds on my phone too. Works one minute, then the next - nothing.

As so many of us seem to be experiencing the same thing I can only assume this is a software glitch/bug.

I had the same problem, but i did have to disable DND. I still got no notifications after that. I finally did a hard reset ( hold the on-off and home button at the same time untill the Apple logo appears), I had to do this a few times. My notifications are finally working. Had to do on both my iPad and iPhone.

The only issue I'm still having ( I think) is I can not delete the email I received the day I installed 10.0.2. No matter what I do I can't get rid of it. Have no problem with email from days prior or after that day. So sorry I updated!!

I've hard reset mine so many times I've lost count.

I've switched things off and on again, checked a million settings but still no joy.

It was the same for me. I wondered why I had that little moon icon on my screen. Turns out it's the Do Not Disturb icon. Turned that feature off and it solved the problem. ty

I just solved my problem. On my the top of the start screen where it shows your battery power there was a little moon, so I swiped them bottom of mr screen where you go to turn airdrop and things on well next to the Bluetooth there was the little moon icon so I touched the little moon (which is for (DND) and it turged DND off and now it works. Because when I'd go to settings/do not disturb/ it would show that it was off but it really wasn't. Hope this helps.
